Bear Lake Utah – The Rocky Place To Be! by Shea Sealy
When fur trappers and mountain men began to assemble around Bear Lake and Bear Lake River, a sturdy heritage and culture was borne. Today, the region bears the fruit of the early travails of this hearty group of settlers. In fact, it is almost as enjoyable to hear recollections of Bear Lake’s past as it is to enjoy the many year round activities that have come to attract visitors from around the world.
Bear Lake is located in the Bear River Valley, which spans northeastern Utah and southeastern Idaho. Surrounded by the gorgeous allure of the Rocky Mountains, Bear Lake has come to be called the Caribbean of the Rockies. The year round appeal of the area makes it as much of a summer resort as a booming winter haven.
At the core of it all is the area’s singular history and striking geography. There is no escaping either element. Add those primary ingredients to a pot that offers boating, skiing, fishing, jet-skiing, swimming, hiking, cave exploration, golfing, horseback riding, hiking, beach sports, awesome downhill skiing, terrific cross country skiing, phenomenal wildlife and more and there is something special for everyone who visits Bear Lake.
Bear Lake knows how to welcome, entertain and host every visitor. The area’s Raspberry Festival kicks off in early August and now draws visitors from around the globe to the festivities. The harvesting of the rich raspberry crop is celebrated with rodeos, parades, fireworks, craft fairs, and musical performances that have drawn much acclaim.
Visitors are always enthralled that Butch Cassidy and his Hole in the Wall Gang paid a visit to the Bank of Montpelier at 3:13 p.m. on August 13th, 1896. After the 13th deposit in the amount of $13.00, Butch robbed the bank and raced out of town.
Although there are strong European influences in the Bear River Valley, it is interesting to know that Montpelier is actually named after Brigham Young’s hometown in Vermont. The area also features towns like Paris, Geneva and Georgetown.
The most popular attractions are in the Bear Lake area, where wildlife, geography and nature all come together to the benefit of the many visitors. Here is a sample of just a few of the Bear Lake Attractions:
- Minnetonaka Cave – A totally unique, deep underground cavern and natural wonder loaded with magical stalagmites and stalagtites.
- Old Limber Pine Nature Hike – A spectacular climb through the pine forest and up the trail to the 2000-year old limber pine.
- Old Ephraim – In Logan Canyon there once lived a large and famous grizzly bear that terrorized local pioneers until his demise. Follow Old Ephraim’s trail and you will understand the mystique.
- Bear Lake Golf – Three champion courses that are sure to test every enthusiast and provide the most stunning landscape views imaginable.
- Paris Tabernacle – The historic Mormon Paris Tabernacle in Paris, Idaho, is inspiring. The striking architecture is singular with a ceiling designed by a famous shipbuilder. No detail was spared. In this memorable building.
- Spectacular downhill skiing – Bear lake skiing has mesmerizing potential for every downhill or cross country skier. Suit yourself and pick a mountain to conquer or test a new slope every day. There are plenty to go around.
